2014 Trash and Treasure Sale – A Success!
The 2014 Attic Trash and Treasure Sale was a huge success once again with the guidance of our president, Kathleen Howell and Co-Chairs, Sheila Melancon and Nikki Spenser. We were happy to have Mervyn’s in Cortana Mall again for our sale site and started moving in on January 12 and the sale was on February 21,22,23. We averaged 60 volunteers a day and our Café, managed by Cynthia Duvieilh, fed everyone with delicious lunches every day.
Courtney Guillen, chairperson from the YMCA, our major recipient, was in charge of all the pick-ups with the truck. She was marvelous, efficient, timely and excellent truck driver. We filled many warehouses which were all donated to us. Courtney had a lot of help to collect things from the Salvation Army (another recipient), employees of the YMCA and many others.
We had 27 sales departments and they were stocked to the brim by some very dedicated Angel volunteers by sale days. There was only one snafu, a severed sprinkler in the loading dock area gave us a scare and beautiful waterfall. With a quick patch and help from the wonderful people of Cortana Mall the water leak was repaired. Three snow/ice days during our set-up days slowed us down but we quickly caught up and were back on track in no time.
On May 1, we had our Check Presentation meeting at the home of Beverly Turner. Checks were given to our recipients as follows: YMCA $65,000, Salvation Army $26,000, Families Helping Families $19,500, Rotary Foundation Scholarship $13,000, Alzheimer’s Services of the Capital Area $1,300, ALS Association of LA-MS $1,300, Compassionate Friends $1,300, Istrouma Area Council Boy Scouts $1,300 and Women’s Community Rehabilitation Center $1,300.
Just a thank you is not enough to express our gratitude for all the hours worked, people making friends and all the benefits we all received from this endeavor. Thanks to Inner Wheel Baton Rouge, Rotary, all recipients, volunteers and Baton Rouge for making this a very successful 2014 AT&T Sale.
